Medical Diagnostic Laboratories
Specific Tests
▲ Immunofluorescence:
Centromere pattern, almost exclusively found in the CREST syndrome
(Calcinosis, Raynaud’s phenomenon, Esophageal dysmotility, Sclerodactyly and
Telangiectasias), a mild variant of progressive systemic sclerosis. [From the postgraduate course on
autoantibodies, organised by Dr. Urania Spyrakou]. In the Athens Medical Diagnostic Laboratories
(IDEA) one can do specific medical tests that are not performed in any
other medical centre in Greece, regardless of plant size or number of staff.
It is a long-standing tradition for our laboratory, which has been the
first investigated allergy in Greece using blood tests over the past 30 years. Below is a brief reference
to some specific tests: ü AMAS (antimalignin).
Blood test for early diagnosis, prognosis and observation of all
malignancies independent of the origin or the histological type. (Test performed
at the Oncolab, Boston). ü ANA – AMA Western Blot. Simultaneous detection of 10 different
antinuclear and the M2 antimitochondrial autoantibodies. ü Activated eosinophils (expr.
GM-CSF). Increased numbers of GM-CSF positive
eosinophils have been found in asthma and other allergic disorders, irrespective of total eosinophil
count. ü Anti-TB antibodies (IgG, IgM, IgA). Rapid diagnosis of pulmonary or
extrapulmonary active tuberculosis by blood test. ü Basal metabolic rate (BMR).
Determination of the daily “combustion” of calories by the oxygen
consumption method (indirect calorimetry). ü Complete semen examination.
Microscopic, functional, biochemical and immunologic (MAR test) examination of the semen. The SFI (Sperm Fertility Index) is
calculated. ü Functional proteomic profile.
Biological profile of the effect of different chemical reagents on
blood’s proteins according to the Institut Européen de
Protidologie. (Co-operation of
C.E.I.A. Lab, Brussels). ü GST-ì (Cancer susceptibility marker). The presence or absence of this enzyme can
affect an individual’s susceptibility to cancers. Presentation by IDEA scientists at the Congress of the American
Association for Clinical Chemistry (Chicago, 1996). ü IAST (Inhalation Allergy Screen Test). A valuable test for the diagnosis of
respiratory allergy. It distinguishes
with certainty allergic from non-allergic patients. Papers for IAST have been presented to the 10th Pancretan
Medical Congress (Rethymnon, 2000), the 5th National Congress of Immunology
(Athens, 2001), the Interasma Regional Meeting (Marrakech, 2003) and the 21st
Medical Congress of Hellenic Armed Forces (Thessalonica, 2006). ü Trace elements.
Determination by the GF-AAS method of 15 metallic elements in blood. (Aluminium,
Cobalt, Copper, Chromium, Iron, Manganese, Molybdenum, Nickel, Selenium,
Silicon, Vanadium, Zinc, Lead, Rubidium, Cadmium). ü UMMA test (Urine methylmalonic acid). The most reliable method for the detection of vitamin B12
deficiency available. (Co-operation
of Norman Clinical Laboratory, Cincinnati). |
